The Masks that We All Wear

2017

Clothes, Styrofoam, Strings, Paper Boxes

100*70*35 cm

The main concept of this mask is about the famous comedian, Charles Spencer Chaplin. I adopted his spirit, the specialty of the job, and also the remarkable black and white makeup to present this mask. The reason why I selected him as the concept is because his films are mostly ironic movies describing social problems. For my work, I also want to talk about the social problem of “masking”. In our daily lives, we meet lots of different people and also get into different situations; however, sometimes we might need to wear a mask and conceal our real feelings to get along with others. Even in a friendship or a relationship, some also wear a mask to be the person their friends/lovers like. The different sizes of the five sense organs and the way them being askew in the design are used in a humorous way to see masking and the life of a comedian.

Electronic Devices, Cotton, Papers, Spray Paint

9*8*16 cm (for each)

The idea of this work is from my nephew's talking toy. When I was watching him playing it, I started to think how the scene is kind of a miniature of the disturbed society, in which many people are just copying others blindly. What's more, if one doesn't speak clearly to the toy, the receptionist may receive and repeat the wrong sound. This parallels another kind of social problem of spreading wrong information after misunderstanding others' words and ending up as rumors spread.

Instead of adopting various materials and making the shape of the work a fabulous way, I only adopted six electronic devices from the talking toys and some simple materials. I wanted to present the idea of how a simple thing may become a complicated matter. Just like how the rumor always comes from very simple words but ends up being extremely different from the original.
