Far Away

Mixed Media / 2021

Inspired by the script's final chapter's chaotic and mournful tone, the scene resembles a chaotic graveyard. Incorporating the main character Joan's monologue about rising water levels, water becomes a central element, merged with the concept of a washing machine to depict emotional turmoil. This setting reflects Joan's tumultuous life with her aunt, where safety was uncertain.

The opening scene portrays Joan hiding in a washing machine, her supposed safe haven. The washing machine's explosion symbolizes the illusion of safety being shattered, representing that what we perceive as a safe place may not be safe after all.

Each washing machine tombstone signifies different yet similar shelters, all labeled "Joan," representing that anyone can become like her, from bystander to perpetrator, and eventually to a victim.

The stage layout allows the audience to look down on the scene, making them silent spectators. Red hats on the chairs allow the audience to participate in the play, serving as reminders of their roles as both bystanders and potential victims.
