The Chairman (2021)

The Chairman is a concert design project created to introduce the iconic Taiwanese rock band to a broader global audience. Known for fusing traditional Taiwanese temple fair culture with contemporary sounds, political commentary, and theatrical flair, the band presents a distinctive visual and musical language that challenges genre boundaries.

This project encompasses creative direction, scenic and stage design, visual storytelling, setlist development, and cultural research. The concert is structured as a two-part experience: an opening “trailer concert” that condenses the band’s core styles into 10 songs across four acts—ranging from folklore and religious spectacle to political critique and playful irreverence—followed by an optional full-length encore set. The goal is to balance accessibility and authenticity, offering new listeners a curated entry point while staying true to the band’s spirit.

The visual design adopts angular forms and layered trusses, echoing the band's masculine energy and allowing flexible rigging across touring venues. To counter the density of instruments and members on stage, the design emphasizes spatial rhythm over clutter. Shadow play and puppetry-inspired projections pay homage to traditional aesthetics while modernizing their visual expression—bridging the gap between local identity and international presence.
